Meet Meagan!
Meagan, tell us a little about yourself!
I was born in San Francisco, but moved to University Place, WA when I was five. I have an extremely small family. It is just my parents, my brother, and I, which means we are all very close. I am a morning person and I try to be in bed no later than 8:30 at night. I love to cook, garden, and read. I am obsessed with Mariners baseball, going to the ballet, photography, hiking, and most importantly my cat.
You recently finished up your graphic design degree! Tell us a little about your program.
I went to Clover Park Technical College to get a degree in Graphic Technologies. It was a great program because they emphasized the print side of graphic design, which I found fascinating. I was also required to learn the basics of web coding and web design, which I dreaded at first. However, after the first week of web classes, I also fell in love with the web side of design. I guess you can say I love anything design-related!
How did you first become interested in graphic design?
Originally I graduated with a degree in Interior Design from Washington State University. While I was there, I was introduced to graphic design and branding for businesses, but was never formally trained in this area. A couple of years later, I decided to go back to school because I was so intrigued by this area of design. I just had to know more, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to explore various areas of graphic design, such as animation or I even took a modern calligraphy class so I could create my own handwriting font if I wanted to.
Where do you find your design inspiration?
I find design inspiration everywhere, such as on fabrics, packaging labels, greeting cards, furniture, and fashion. I love to take interesting patterns and color combinations and match them with clean and minimal designs to create my own style of design.
What’s one current graphic design trend you love and one you’re ready to retire?
The trend I love the most is the mix and match of fonts. I have an obsession with typography. I believe you can create a more unique and interesting brand that will set you apart from a competitor by mixing and match fonts. It is also an easy way to refresh if a client wants a change without having to completely rebrand.
The graphic design trend I am ready to retire is the overused trend of bevel and embossing text with a dramatic drop shadow. Typography should shine on its own, not to mention that the current trend in typography is to be minimalistic and to create simple, uniform edges. Flat is the new black!
