Intern blog series: Five Reasons Why I Love PR
From the desks of the Revolution PR interns...
With six months down and just a few more to go, I’ve been reflecting on my time spent as an intern here at Revolution PR. So far, I’ve learned a ton and have had the chance to try many different activities, like creating media lists, drafting blog posts and pitching media. Still, I recognize there’s still so much more to PR, which is just ONE thing I love about this industry.
I’m here to share the rest of the reasons why I’ve fallen in love with PR.
#1: I’m building relationships.
Building relationships with people is the foundation of PR. I learned quickly that without them, a PR person’s job becomes really tough and probably wouldn’t even exist! Thanks to social media, this has become a lot easier for PR people today. I'm interacting daily via Facebook and Twitter, something I really love doing to connect with my favorite bloggers, stay on top of PR trends, and look at (really) cute photos of dogs on AKC Gold’s Facebook page.
#2: It’s challenging – in a good way.
I’ve realized that every task I work on is part of something bigger. For example, when outreaching to media, a less than stellar media list means you won’t be able to successfully pitch a story to get coverage, reach your campaign goals, or have results to share with a client. One step leads to the next step and then the next and so on!
Being in PR has allowed me to become a
thinker- always looking ahead and thinking about the bigger picture. It can be hard at times, but worth it.
#3: Getting to work with media is a rush.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is getting to work directly with media. This first time I called a local broadcast station to pitch a client campaign, I was
so nervous! But the rush I got when they picked up the phone and were receptive and excited to receive my pitch definitely outweighed those jitters.
#4: Becoming better at social media.
Thanks to PR, I have become a social media fanatic, and more so than just checking Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest all day long. I see it as a great opportunity to listen and learn about the people you’re interacting with, and I love using these outlets as windows into a client’s target audience.
#5 Staying in “the know.”
Since one of my responsibilities at Revolution is coverage searching, I spend a lot of time combing through media outlets in search of hits for our clients. This not only allows me to become more familiar with different publications, websites and blogs, but it also gives me the opportunity to stay on top of current trends and watch news stories develop. I know this is an incredibly important aspect of any PR person’s job, but I also love being able to initiate those “Hey, have you heard about…” conversations.
