5 Tips for Sustainable Travel
Vacation is a time to relax and let go of our day-to-day responsibilities - we all deserve that! However, it’s important to keep the environment in mind even as we let our worries drift away.
Unsustainable tourism contributes more than five percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and although we can’t do much to reduce the impact of air travel, there are other ways to minimize our environmental footprint while traveling.
The Revolution team is sharing how we keep the planet top-of-mind while exploring the world!
Darby’s favorite trick is to bring snacks on the plane in reusable containers, like this assorted container set from Anko!
This means she doesn’t use a heap of single-use plastic bags, and isn’t forced to buy overpriced, prepackaged food on the plane or in the airport.
Another alternative to plastic bags that Zaina uses are Stasher bags. These reusable silicone bags are microwave and dishwasher safe, and incredibly durable so you won’t have to worry about food oozing all over your new vacay clothes!
She also suggests bringing reusable bamboo utensils and straws to help avoid using disposable, plastic sets along your journey. Bringing your own utensils also ensures that you’ll never be stuck trying to improvise on the spot - ever tried to eat yogurt without a spoon? Not pretty!
Carolyn loves supporting restaurants who source their food locally. The transportation sector produces 29% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. and food distribution contributes significantly to this percentage.
By eating at restaurants that source locally, we can decrease the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced. Not to mention, the food usually tastes better - nothing beats spaghetti in Italy with sauce made from locally grown tomatoes and basil!
Humans buy about 1,000,000 plastic bottles per minute and only about 23% of plastic bottles in the U.S. are recycled. To help reduce the number of bottles purchased, Zaina says she takes her Hydro Flask everywhere with her - most of our team does! If you’re worried about drinking unfiltered water, consider investing in a portable water filter like this easy-to-use one from GRAYL!
Before you embark on your next adventure, take some time to think about how you can make a difference and help the environment. You’ll feel much less guilty letting go of your responsibilities knowing you are being gentle to mother nature!
