Meet Sam: Our Summer Intern!
We’re excited to introduce our summer intern, Sam! Read on for a Q & A with the newest addition to our Rev team.
There are a lot of PR agencies out there, why did you pick Revolution?
When I was searching for summer PR internships, every company I came across specialized in tech -- welcome to Seattle! I was looking for an agency that matched my interests in healthy food and fitness and was excited to see clients listed under both of those categories at Revolution PR. And when I met with Jennifer, I instantly knew this is where I wanted to be.
Additionally, I wanted an internship where I could actually get in and get my hands dirty with projects! As a small agency, Revolution seemed like the perfect place to get real hands-on experience.
You graduate this December, tell us a little about your program!
Eek! Yes, I’ll graduate from Western Washington University in December with a Communications Studies major and Public Relations minor. What I love most about Western (besides its backyard being Mt. Baker and the bay) is the huge emphasis on real-world work experience. In many of my classes, I was able to publish articles, design layouts for school publications, and even worked on PR materials that were utilized for a club on campus. Western has really helped me feel prepared for all that the PR industry has to offer.
What advice do you have for college graduates seeking a PR career?
Connect! Connect! Connect! Reach out to your parents, family friends and professors for any information or advice they may have. And don’t be afraid to pick up your laptop and start sending emails to agencies that you feel match your interests and introduce yourself. That’s how I connected with Revolution about a summer internship!
The more you get your name and face out there, the better.
What is an aspect of PR that you love?
If I had to just pick one aspect of PR that I love, I would have to say blogging. I read lifestyle blogs religiously, so I appreciate any company that puts in extra effort with a blog. Blogging can help round out a company’s brand by forming a relationship with its consumers. I know I’m much more likely to buy a product or follow a brand consistently if they are able to connect with me through blogs.
A company that manages its brand through blogs is
Microsoft. Yes, you read that correctly: Microsoft. Its blog isn’t your run–of-the-mill tech company blog about software updates. It keeps readers engaged and helps position the company as a real person who you’re having a conversation with about daily life inside the tech powerhouse. I definitely recommend.
What do you like to do with your spare time?
I grew up in a family that cannot sit still, and I’ve carried that over to my adult life as well. I’m constantly outside searching for a new mountain to ski down or hike up. When I’m inside, I’m planning my next travel destination (I studied abroad in Europe for six months in college) or attending a hot yoga class.
