Employee Q&A: Brenna Sussman
We're excited to share that Brenna Sussman has joined our team as a spring intern! Take a look at our Q&A as we learn a little more about her.
There are a lot of PR agencies out there, why did you pick Revolution?
Revolution really embodied the two things that I was looking for in an agency. First, it focuses on mainly lifestyle brands, which coincides with both my experience and interests. Second, it is a small agency - something that is important for me in terms of being able to contribute to the company and get a breadth of experience. Then I met with Jennifer and Shauna and they were so great, I knew Rev was the place for me!
What advice do you have for college graduates seeking a PR career?
Utilize your network! When I was job searching I reached out to professors, family friends, old bosses, etc. I even messaged tons of college alumni on LinkedIn. You will be surprised how many people will be willing to meet you for coffee and give you advice. Also, learn to be organized. Being in PR means jumping between 5-10 projects a day and the last thing you want is for a client (or boss!) to ask you about a task that you forgot.
We know you just graduated from college, tell us about your degree program!
I just graduated from Pacific Lutheran University (Go Lutes!) with a combination degree in PR and Advertising. Our school is unique in that is combines PR and advertising into the same curriculum, and I really think that gave me a leg up professionally. Advertising taught me how to write for selling a product, which is incredibly helpful when I am pitching to media or influencers.
How did you first become interested in public relations?
I grew up working at my dad’s consulting firm and while I disliked most of the work (he made me clean the office), I loved watching how the company fostered and built relationships with their clients and I knew that was something I could be successful doing. In college my very first PR class was about analyzing music videos based on an artist’s branding strategy and from there I was hooked!
What brands are on your radar?
Nowadays so few people trust straight advertising, so I really admire companies that are using bloggers or great social strategies to connect with customers. I think Nordstrom does a great job with their social media and also in partnering with big name bloggers. Taco Bell is awesome on social media and really does a great job of engaging with their target audience. I also think that both Old Navy and New Balance have really done a great job refreshing their brands to attract new customers and stay current.
What are your favorite places in Seattle?
I am new to Seattle so I am finding new favorite areas every day. Alki Beach and Pike Place are probably my favorites so far. I am also having fun exploring the Madison Park neighborhood around Revolution’s office. The top item on my Seattle to-do list? Go up the Space Needle!
What do you like to do with your spare time?
In my spare time you will usually find me on a run, Instagrammin’ pictures of my cat, or hanging out with my friends and family. I also enjoy indulging in retail therapy and good desserts.
